Thinking Outside the Box with Your Travel Accommodations

Worldwide - Tuesday, June 30th, 2015

It used to be that if you wanted a comfortable place to stay during your next vacation, that you would book a room in a hotel or resort. However, many travelers are searching for non-traditional travel accommodations to further enhance their travel experience. Some of these accommodations help to make travel more affordable, while others make travel more luxurious. Below are some of the most popular hotel alternatives.

Hostels

Hostels are no longer just for college students backpacking throughout Europe. In fact, many of today’s hostels rival that of a low-budget hotel room. That being said, hostels are often a more affordable option than staying in a hotel. They also provide you with the opportunity to meet fellow travelers from around the world. While some of the amenities may be shared spaces, such as the bathrooms and showers—you may be able to find a hostel that offers a private room, or room for you and your travel companions to share.

Vacation Rentals

With the ability to work remotely, you may be able to take an extended vacation. That may leave a traditional hotel room feeling too cramped for you and your family during your extended-stay. For this reason, you may want to check with a local realtor to see if a condominium or house is available as a vacation rental. You may even be able to find the vacation rental on popular global websites such as Craigslist. This includes homeowners who have a second home for short-term rental purposes, or who are looking to rent out their home during the off-season.

Airbnb

Airbnb is a popular hotel alternative, for both those on a budget—and for those who are searching for luxury accommodations. If you are traveling on a budget, you may be able to crash on a locals couch for a minimal fee—or sleep in their guest room. This also allows you direct access to someone who can help you to plan your trip from a non-tourist point of view. If access to the kitchen is provided, you can also save money on meals.

On the flipside, you can also find luxurious condos, apartments, and homes that you can rent on Airbnb while the homeowner is out of town. This provides you with far more convenience and comfort than a hotel room, and allows you greater freedom and flexibility when it comes to the area of town you can stay in.

Extended Stay Apartments

Extended-stay apartments used to be a popular travel choice for business travelers staying in town for longer than a week or two. However, these furnished apartments have become a popular choice for travelers who want to have the convenience and comforts of home—such as a kitchen, full living room, and maybe even a handful of on-site amenities. This is a perfect option for a family who wants to cook most of their meals while on vacation.

Before you book the overnight accommodations for your next vacation, consider if the hotel alternatives above might be a better fit. Be sure to keep the safety of you accommodations top of mind, as well as the traditional hotel amenities you will be missing out on—such as room service.
